Dear Members, I was really quite perturbed when I read this article. Why are we Hindus, so docile and not fighting back. We are being squeezed by the Muslims on one side and the Christians on the other side. Very sad indeed. But what bothers me is, how come they are allowed to do such a thing?

Long and healthy life by Power of Yoga and Meditations

Long and healthy life by Power of Yoga and Meditations

Your website is beautiful, informative and Excellent.
Article by M.P. Bhattathiri, Retired Chief Technical Examiner , to The Govt. of Kerala. Humble request that it may be published in your website and magazine after editing if necessary

The American justice Dept. have recently approved the power of yoga and meditation vide a recent judgement in the American court."Man Who Slapped Wife Sentenced to Yoga, It's Anger Management, Says Judge." First there was house arrest. Now there's yoga. A judge ordered a man convicted of slapping his wife to take a yoga class as part of his one-year probation. "It's part of anger management," County Criminal Court at Law Judge Larry Standley said of the ancient Hindu philosophy of exercise and well-being. "For people who are into it, it really calms them down. " Standley, a former prosecutor, said the case of James Lee Cross was unique. Cross, a 53-year-old car salesman from Tomball, explained that his wife was struggling with a substance abuse problem and that he struck her on New Year's Eve during an argument about her drinking. "He was trying to get a hold of her because she has a problem," Standley said after the court hearing. "I thought this would help him realize that he only has control over himself." The sentence came as a surprise to Cross, who was told to enroll in a class and report back to Standley on his progress. "I'm not very familiar with it," Cross said of yoga. "From what I understand, it may help in a couple ways, not only as far as mentally settling, but maybe a little weight loss." Darla Magee, an instructor at Yoga Body Houston in River Oaks, said she would recommend that Cross take a basic yoga class emphasizing breathing and including a variety of postures -- forward bends, back bends and twists. "Yoga can help us to get rid of many emotional issues we might have," she said. "It's a spiritual cleanse." Prosecutor Lincoln Goodwin agreed to a sentence of probation without jail time because Cross had no significant criminal history http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2365341.

Societal Obligations of Research and Teaching

Oct 27, 2004 Conrad Naber Lecture Hall, International University Bremen, Campus Ring 1 28759Bremen

Richard R. Ernst, Laboratorium für Physikalische Chemie, ETH Hönggerberg HCI, Zürich, Switzerland

The main message of this lecture is a very simple one: Research and teaching are most important responsibilities of any university, but, in addition, there are societal obligations that should not be under- estimated. Universities are training future generations of politicians, industrial managers, and opinion leaders. Correspondingly, planning of a sustainable future, beneficial to all, belongs to the major tasks of institutions of higher learning. Students of all disciplines need to learn to think along these lines. Especially in our time, which is dominated by monetary and short-term commercial interests, long-term planning becomes more urgent than ever before. The academic community at universities is urged to demonstrate its willingness and creativity in shaping our global future.

Real goal of University education - formation of personalities

Real goal of University education - formation of personalities

[Syn 6]
The high-profile public lecture hosted by Nobel Laureate Professor Richard Ernst addressed the long-term responsibility of universities, which goes much beyond our common understanding of academic obligations, restricted to teaching and research. Professor Richard did not intend to give specific answers to the great overarching questions of a global future but instead appealed to the academic community for discussing, more than in the past and at all conceivable occasions, questions that relate to society and its future, hoping for stimulating a lively discussion culture at universities. His main goal is merely to raise the alertness for societal questions in the academic community.

From K Jayalakshmi DH News Service Hyderabad:
Deccan Herald Jan 5, 2006

As a society we are now focused only on making money with the result that our children have nothing to imbibe except the same pursuit of money.

Scientists are buried in their shafts, worried only about their exciting studies and not about world affairs. This has to change, said Nobel laureate Richard R Ernst while delivering his special lecture on ' Academic responsibility and our global future' addressed to the scientists at the 93rd Indian Science Congress. Prof Ernst won the Nobel in 1991 for his work in developing high resistance NMR spectroscopy.
