Health for Humanity Yogathon!

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, USA (HSS) wishes you, your family and friends a happy and healthy makar sankraman of the Sun or  the commencement of the Sun’s northern course - the Uttaraayana. The festivities of Makar Sankranti are celebrated all across Bharat and by expatriates abroad, by exchanging sweets and best wishes.

Since the last three yearssny.jpgin the United States, HSS is celebrating the time of Makar Samkraman by means of a unique nationwide project, to create awareness about Yoga. This year, Surya Namaskar Yajna (SNY) or Health for humanity Yogathon began on January 16 and will run through January 31, 2010. It is now in full action in 48 States of the United States.

Diverse group of people across all age group began participating zealously.  As an inaugural ceremony, 1021 enthusiasts participated from East Coast to West Coast this morning in what is called “Surya MayorHoffmanEstateIL.JPGNamaskar Leher” or a “Wave of Surya Namaskar.” Starting at 8:00 AM EST, this wave was advancing every two hours from East coast to West Coast, covering all time zones! Just in two hours within each time zone or total of five hours, total  32,358 Surya Namaskars were performed! As a highlight of this wave, Honorary Mayor Mr William McLeod of Hoffman Estates, a suburb of Chiacgo, IL actively participate in the local SNY  workshop  while City of Decatur in Georgia declared January 17th as “Yoga Day/Surya Namaskar Day, USA.”

Our goal is 10,000 participants and 1 Million Surya Namaskars by January 31st, 2010. This year, number of schools and yoga clubs are actively participating in this unique opportunity and getting energized. We strongly believe that this Yogathon will help all of us to achieve healthy body, mind and spirit.
