The temple is the focus for all aspects of everyday life in the Hindu community - religious, cultural, educational and social. The temple is a place where God may be approached and where divine knowledge can be discovered. Identify the temples below. Answers given at the bottom

1. The temple hosts an annual pilgrimage, where the idols of Krishna, Baladeva and Subhadra, are taken out in the streets.

2. Built in the 7th century A.D., this port features the Pancha-Rathas, five rock-cut temples built in different styles. Here, one can also find a shore temple, and cave temples depicting stories from the Mahabharata.

3. This Chola temple has the largest Shiva-linga in the world. The temple’s crown, carved out of just two pieces, weighs an astounding 80 tones.

4. This Mother Goddess temple, located at an altitude of 5300 feet, is visited by thousands of pilgrims each year chanting “Jai Mata Di”.

5. The foremost of the twelve Jyotirlings, it has been rebuilt each of the six times it has been destroyed.

6. This cave temple is the largest monolithic (rock-cut) architecture in the world.

7. This temple takes the form of the chariot of Surya (sun god) . The wheels of the chariot function as sundials.

8. This temple features an ingeniously carved 1000 pillared hall. Two of the pillars produce the octave notes when tapped.

9. The largest Vishnu temple in the world, located in Cambodia.

10. The most remote of the four Char-Dham sites, this place is located at an altitude of 11800 feet above sea level.

11. Lakhs of Hindu pilgrims visit this Shiva linga each year.

12. The world’s second busiest and richest religious centre.
