वक्रतुंड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभनिर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा

vakratuṁḍa mahākāya sūryakoṭi samaprabhanirvighnaṁ kuru me deva sarvakāryeṣu sarvadā

Meaning: O Ganesha - Ganapati, One with a curved trunk, a large body, and a brilliance equal to a crore (10 million) suns! O God, please make all my undertakings free from obstacles always.

Ganesha in many Hindu traditions is considered the lord of learning and the remover of obstacles—hence he also carries the name Vighneshwara (Vighna – obstacle). This prayer is offered to Lord Ganesha so that all obstacles are removed.

Legend: Ganesha was created by Goddess Gauri (consort of Lord Shiva) to guard her home. When Lord Shiva was stopped by Ganesha at the entrance he cut off Ganesha’s head only to realize later that Ganesha was his son. The Lord then joined an elephant’s head onto the body of Ganesha.

Lord Shiva made his son worthy of worship at the beginning of all undertakings, marriages, expeditions, studies, etc. He ordained that the annual worship of Ganesha should take place on the fourth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada.
