Nar Sewa, Narayan Sewa
Nar Sewa, Narayan Sewa
Divya took one summer of her life, and dedicated it to service to society. She spent her summer painting pictures of Ganesha, the sacred Swastika, and the radiant Aum on various designs of fabric. She then sold the works of art to her friends and family, raising €250. (250- Euros) That’s nearly $300!! With the money, Divya was able to sponsor one child’s education through Sewa International. With one summer, Divya provided a path to making one child literate. She chose Sewa Int. because she knew that her money would be put to good use, unlike other charities which spend a large portion on their own administrative costs.
Divya is very pleased with her efforts. She said, "I like painting and I decided to do some thing creative and charitable. I made good use of my spare time." In total, she made 45 paintings, earning an average donation of €6 - approximately $7 - per painting. Divya regularly attends Manchester and Warrington Samiti shakhas and would like to urge youngsters to be creative and do something good for the community. "It will make you feel good about yourself," she said. She got the idea to sponsor a child's education when she saw a letter and a photograph of a poor 12 year old boy whom her parents had sponsored.
Many of us who like to draw do it all the time, during Math… during Science, English, History… pretty much whenever we shouldn’t be doing it, and most of the time just for fun! But try this, get together with a few other kishors in your shakha, whether they can draw or not, and think of some way you can implement this project, or something similar. If you can’t draw yourself, maybe talk to your school administrators or even city officials to set up a 1-week activity in which participants meet for a given time each day, and draw for the sake of charity. It could be for Katrina aid, or for the soldiers in Iraq… you might even be able to earn some community service hours while you’re at it!
“Nar Sewa, Narayan Sewa.” Serving humanity is serving God, says the Sewa International slogan. Here is a list of major disasters which would benefit from your monetary donations: Katrina Hurricane, Indian Ocean Tsunami, Jammu & Kashmir Earthquake, Bihar/Assam/Gujarat Flood.
